Amazon | The Story of My Life (Dover Thrift Editions) | Helen ...

Excerpt from The Story of My Life by Hellen Keller ( kindle version ) 282-325

One day, at the same time as I was playing with my new doll, Miss Sullivan placed my large rag doll into my lap also, spelled "d-o-l-l" and tried to make me remember the fact that "d-o-l-l" applied to each. Earlier in the day we had had a tussle over the words "m-u-g" and "w-a-t-e-r." Miss Sullivan had tried to affect it upon me that "m-u-g" is mug and that "w-a-t-e-r" is water, however I continued in confounding the two. In melancholy she had dropped the challenge for the time, most effective to renew it at the first opportunity. I became impatient at her repeated tries and, seizing the new doll, I dashed it upon the floor. I changed into keenly thrilled when I felt the fragments of the broken doll at my ft. Neither sorrow nor regret accompanied my passionate outburst. I had now not loved the doll. In the still, dark international in which I lived there was no sturdy sentiment or tenderness. I felt my instructor sweep the fragments to at least one aspect of the fire, and I had a feel of delight that the cause of my soreness become removed. She added me my hat, and I knew I became going out into the warm sunshine. This concept, if a wordless sensation can be called a notion, made me hop and pass with pride.

We walked down the course to the nicely-house, attracted by way of the fragrance of the honeysuckle with which it changed into blanketed. Some one become drawing water and my trainer located my hand below the spout. As the cool stream gushed over one hand she spelled into the opposite the word water, first slowly, then hastily. I stood still, my entire attention constant upon the motions of her palms. Suddenly I felt a misty consciousness as of some thing forgotten—a thrill of returning thought; and one way or the other the mystery of language become found out to me. I knew then that "w-a-t-e-r" supposed the first-rate cool some thing that was flowing over my hand. That living phrase awakened my soul, gave it light, wish, pleasure, set it free! There have been barriers nevertheless, it is actual, but barriers that would in time be swept away.

I left the well-house keen to research. Everything had a call, and every name gave birth to a new notion. As we returned to the residence every item which I touched seemed to quiver with life. That turned into because I noticed the whole thing with the ordinary, new sight that had come to me. On getting into the door I remembered the doll I had damaged. I felt my way to the fireplace and picked up the pieces. I attempted vainly to put them together. Then my eyes full of tears; for I found out what I had accomplished, and for the primary time I felt repentance and sorrow.

I found out a incredible many new phrases that day. I do no longer don't forget what all of them were; but I do understand that mother, father, sister, instructor have been among them—words that were to make the sector blossom for me, "like Aaron's rod, with flowers." It would had been difficult to discover a happier baby than I was as I lay in my crib at the near of that eventful day and lived over the thrill it had introduced me, and for the primary time longed for a new day to come back.

This concept, if a wordless sensation can be called a notion, made me hop and pass with pride.

That living phrase awakened my soul, gave it light, wish, pleasure, set it free!
